Levels 1–99 are a gentle warm-up. Around level 100 the food groups get denser, and past level 250 the colors interlock in a way that punishes a bad tap order. Here is exactly when and why the game ramps up.
We have played through hundreds of boards and the curve is consistent. Beginner levels (1–99) are sparse: few colors, obvious big groups, almost any tap order works. Intermediate levels (100–249) introduce interlocking groups — the order you tap starts to matter, and clearing a big group too early can strand a smaller color into crumbs.
Advanced boards (250+) are where Food Hunt gets serious. Large groups interlock with single stragglers, and one early tap decides whether the rest of the clear is clean or a slow crawl. The skill that separates players at this stage is tap order, not speed: know which color to clear first, and which one to leave so it can be swept in a single satisfying motion.
The jump at level 100 is real but gradual. A board in the 80s and a board in the 110s look almost the same at first glance, then one early tap leaves a lonely pink crumb in the corner and you understand why. The game never adds rules, it just wraps more planning dependency into the same rule set. New players who hit the 100s and suddenly stall are usually not worse at the game, they are still playing level 30 habits on level 120 boards.
By the 200s the boards are wall-to-wall. You will see every difficulty archetype show up: the interlocked pair where one color cannot be touched before the other, the giant group that looks like a obvious first tap but is actually the trap, and the scattered color that demands a full clean sweep at the end. This is where the three question habit from the beginner guide earns its keep: biggest, trapped, scattered. The 250 plus boards simply refuse to reward guessing.
